My Timber Frame

My timber frame is hand crafted, with traditional joinery of the highest quality. Perhaps in a rustic rough sawn hemlock, or maybe a smooth finished douglas fir material. Let's see...

These weathered hemlock beams really give that old barn feel. If you like this, it will save you big bucks as purchasing the authentic reclaimed beams are pricey. (I really love this timber frame)!

Douglas fir allows for a more formal design. Smooth finish, maybe some arches, corbels...a beautiful way to go. Notice the hardwood pegs, left proud on the mortise and tenon joints.

Open great room, ceiling beams over the kitchen and dining room, yes, this is what my timber frame will include. AND, I will have custom designed and handcrafted kitchen cabinetry to go with my custom designed and handcrafted timber frame! Both from VERMONT.

For the exterior look, I tend to like clean, simple, straight forward. This would absolutely do!

My timber frame will come from Vermont Timber Works, Inc. And, how do I know this? Because I know quality and I know craftsmanship. Seeing it every day at work and every night at home.

The Vermont Timber Works shop is full of timbers (this is a very good thing). Douglas fir timbers for the Chapel for Holy Apostles project to be erected in October of this year.

A timber frame home by Vermont Timber Works is always a good idea. Hand crafted, traditional joinery and custom designs. NICE! Here are two of my favorite completed timber frame projects by VTW.

This very pretty timber frame home features hand hewn white pine and a gambrel roof design. Below is an interior finished shot. Gorgoeous, don't you think?

Another favorite is our Chase House. Native hemlock timber frame home with traditional joinery, mortise and tenon with hardwood pegs and dovetail joints.

This family has outgrown their cape and has called Vermont Timber Works for an addition. Repeat business is the best!

Timber frames are hand crafted in our North Springfield, VT shop and shipped all over the country, regardless of the season. Our Vermont Timber Works Crew raises many of these timber frames. As I type, warm at my desk, Tommy and the guys are in Rockingham, VT organizing and assembling a timber frame house. The weather today is not bad, but I bet the wind has a bite to it!

We assemble the bents and sections on the ground, then raise them into place with a crane and fork truck. It's very cool to watch. This project actually has 2 timber frame structures, the first being the timber frame barn AND we have a video on youtube...take a look!

The Notre Dame Academy located on Staten Island is getting a new Arts & Humanities Center . A timber frame chapel is part of the scope.

Timber Homes, Room by Room Ideas

Let's start in the kitchen. Exposed timber ceiling beams throughout this full timber frame home. Big open spaces are wonderful in timber homes, but the kitchen really needs a ceiling.

Adding some interest in this sitting room is the octogon shape. Focus may be on the fireplace, but you can't help but notice these beautiful timber beams.

Another idea for your sitting area may be something like this shown below. Darker timber beams with light colored walls and lots of windows.

Most timber frame homes include a loft area, here is a very pretty idea for your consideration.
How about that great room area? How about hand hewn timber? Sounds good to me.

Bedroom, perhaps a few timber ceiling beams is all you need.

Timber Frame Projects with Douglas Fir Timbers

First things first. We can't begin your timber frame fabrication until the timbers arrive. Much of what we hand craft is designed with douglas fir timbers. Douglas fir is a beautiful wood and is also quite strong. Unloading this truck from Disdero Lumber Co. is our very own PJZ. Normally this is done by MJ or Toddy but Pete has forklift training for times like this. He is the only one here! Besides us girls that is. Great job!

A curtain side flat bed from GMH Transport. GMH handles all of our trucking through out the US and Canada.
Two flat beds will be needed for this oak timber frame barn. Carefully wrapped and loaded by MJ, James, Kellin & Mike (supervised by Miss Ruby).

Red oak timbers in a rough sawn finish were chosen for this Pennsyvannia timber frame barn. Traditional Joinery all hand crafted by our Vermont Timber Works Crew.

Timber Framers & A Long Weekend...

Vermont Timber Works will be closed on Monday (Labor Day) as will most businesses. These 3 day weekends are great! The unofficial end of summer and usually a barbecue or two.

The tree in our front yard is screaming Autumn, although I am trying to ignore it. The cooler mornings turn into very warm afternoons. MJ and Jason were quite warm yesterday, out in the full sun with some of our red oak timber frame barn project.

Our timber frame bents are assembled on the ground and raised with a lull and/or a crane. We used both on this job.
Above Doug, Dan and Rick are all up on the frame. Much coordination goes into a successful timber frame raising.

Our Professional Engineer PJZ has been learning Solid Works and so far he likes it. Vermont Timber Works is thinking about adding Solid Works...I'll keep you posted.

DataCAD has been our program of choice for years, we like that better than AutoCAD. With Computer Assisted Design Programs we are able to create timber framing shop drawings for client approval as well as finalize timber framing joint details for our shop crew. Something like the drawing shown below of our Spruce Camp Lodge.

From the sweetest timber frame chapel to most extravagant timber frame monastery, Vermont Timber Works is the timber framer of choice. VTW can custom design, engineer, handcraft and raise your timber frame project.

Let's take a look at the Veteran's Cemetery Chapel shown above and below. This lovely timber frame chapel overlooks Randolph, VT. It features an open air design with sliding walls that close it for winter use. Pretty timber frame, don't you think?

The Bethlehem Monastery of Poor Clares, located in Barhamsville, VA is a bit more complex in timber frame design.

The 2-1/2 story frame reaches just shy of 45 feet at the very top of the cupola. Now THAT is a timber frame cupola!

This timber frame features traditional joinery, a small amount of steel, and over 31,000 board feet of douglas fir heavy timber.

Nicole's Walk for Make a WISH & the Vermont Timber Works Crew

Rick's 7th annual Nicole's Walk for Make A Wish was another success. Not only was the weather beautiful, Rick's donations crossed over the $100,000 mark overall. Rick is shown above making a speech in which he explains the meaning of Make A Wish to him and why he does it every year. Very emotional!

Vermont Timber Works made a good showing and we have some pictures to prove it.

Above is Kellin & Megan. Kellin is on our timber frame crew and hand crafts timbers, raises timber frames and can layout for fabrication.

Sandy (that's me) and Buddy on the way back. I'm 1/3 of our timber frame sales team. Vermont Timber Works custom designs and engineers timber frames for residential & commercial projects. Usually the first call to or from us will be from Sandy, Sue or Travis.

Denise and her husband Terry joined the walk for the first time. Denise joined Vermont Timber Works earlier this year and is our Finance Director.

Mike and his wife Meredith. Mike is a subcontractor for Vermont Timber Works and he is very versatile. Layout, hand crafting timbers, timber frame raisings, you name it, Mike can do it.

The Men of Vermont Timber Works...

Yes, just the men...maybe we should put out a Vermont Timber Works Calender? Do we have enough guys for 12 months? JK guys, not to worry.

The craftsman at Vermont Timber Works take pride in their work, and it shows. We custom design, engineer and hand craft each timber frame project.

Let's start at the top...Dan is our president and he runs the shop, does layout, fabrication, material orders and more. He is a hard one to get a photo of, but here is one at the Olana Wagon House raising. Dan is on the left and Rick is on the right.

Speaking of Rick, he is our Director of Operations and handles our estimating and covers in the shop as needed. Rick can handle any job out there including turned timber columns and peeled poles. Below is Rick and Pete discussing the Mazur Project. (It was COLD in the shop & office that day).

Peter is one of our Vice Presidents as well as our Professional Engineer. We keep him very busy as he is involved in pretty much every aspect of the timber framing process. Pete even goes on raisings.

Doug is our co-owner and original VP. Doug handles more of the design and office aspects such as approving estimates, setting complexities for bids, reviewing designs, redesigning as needed, shop drawings, preliminary engineering and our awesome web page. I'm working on getting a candid of Doug, so for now....above is his mini and below is Kramer.

Doug as well as Dan are usually on hand for the raisings. AND, I found a great picture of Doug. Here at our Southern Vermont Welcome Center timber frame raising. Don't look down!

Travis hangs in the front office with Sue and me, he is the newest member of our sales team. With a background in building trades and sales, he is a welcome addition.

Vermont Timber Works shop crew consists of Mikey, shown below raising the Sands Barn in Dublin, NH. Weathered hemlock timbers and traditional joinery.

James, shown here working on the Davis timber frame. All reclaimed and hand hewn white oak. Tough to work with! (The timber, not James).

Kellin also worked on the Davis Project also, but here he is working on Artzt. Kellin and MJ carefully cut the timber arches.

Both tried to jump out of this picture, but stayed in it just for you. Thanks guys, arches looks great.

MJ has worked with us for about 6 months and fits right in! Todd and Jason round out our shop crew.
Jason did pretty much all of the cutting on the Mazur timber frame project. (And it's up)! All rough sawn hemlock and traditional joinery. Todd is another one that is hard to get a picture of...but I did get a one of him and MJ during the Davis Assembly. (Dan is hiding behind MJ).

Nicole's Walk for Make A Wish 5/18/08

Nicole's Walk for Make A Wish is a yearly event for the crew at Vermont Timber Works. Richard Labrecque, our chief estimator, organizes this walk in memory of his daughter, Nicole. This will be the 7th year that Rick and his wife Robin have coordinated Nicole's Walk. The goal this year is to reach $100,000 overall. Come on, let's grant some wishes!

This year's walk will begin at the east end of the Robert S. Jones Industrial Center parking Lot. Registration will begin at 8:30am. The Springfield Walking and Bike Path (ToonervilleTrail) will again be used for the event. The walk, from start to finish, will be 6.2 miles and you will be able to walk, bike or roller blade as much or as little as you like. Start time will be 9:30am. Vermont Timber Works crew and family are usually on hand for this event, so look for us! Sue, Sandy, Travis, PJZ, Denise, Megan, Doug, Dan, Mikey, Kellin, James, Jason, Toddy, MJ, and Tom. Vermont Timber Works travels across the country and beyond to raise their timber frames. This past week and into this week the guys have been in Bentonville, VA. The Shenandoah State Park Visitor's Center is getting a new timber frame pavilion and deck area.

DO your homework.

Timber framing companies are not all the same. You'll need to narrow in on which timber framer is best suited to your needs. At Vermont Timber Works we offer hand crafted quality, traditional joinery and custom designs, this may or may not be what you are looking for. Vermont Timber Works focuses on the timber frame only. No sip panels or conventional framing included, no kit homes or pre-engineered package deals. Again, this may be or may not be what you would like.

DO have a budget and feel free to discuss it with your timber framer.

Everyone has a budget and it needs to be discussed. The timber frame company you choose should be a company that you feel comfortable with. At Vermont Timber Works we want our clients to know that we will do our best for them. Whether they have a large or small project or just need a few decorative beams. Our reputation depends on this.

Don't assume you are getting traditional joinery, not all timber framing companies offer it (or do it well).

Traditional Joinery: Mortise and Tenon Joinery with Hardwood Pegs. Dove Tails, Shoulder Joints and more. If you need Steel Joinery (or just like the look of it) not to worry, at Vermont Timber Works we offer this also.

DO ask for referrals.

A reputable timber framer will understand and offer referrals to you. It may be viewing a timber frame that is in your area. It may be talking with a home owner or builder that has worked with them or has a similar project. Heavy Timbers and Trusses and Bears, Oh My!

One of my favorite places to visit has always been the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory in Charlotte, Vt. Now that I work at Vermont Timber Works and know that the Heavy Timber Construction was done by our crew, I like it even better!

Notice the Heavy Timber King Post Trusses that span the shop, with Douglas Fir Timbers and steel gusset plate joinery.

Rustic Timber pole Columns make the exterior of the building extra special.

Here we notice that inside of the store are octagonal Timber Trusses with Steel Joinery. The project is so inviting that even the BEARS want to make themselves at home among the timbers.

Like the one the little bear is walking in this picture, there is a FINE LINE between Timber Framers and Expert Timber Framers....fortunately, we've been on the right side of that line for years!

Ok, well it's not our big barn anymore, it has a home near Albany, NY. This timber frame design allows for a basketball court!

Steel Joinery was needed for the open 40ft span. At Vermont Timber Works traditional joinery as well as the steel is available. All hand crafted, no CNC machines in our shop.

Mr. Duker has a bigger timber frame barn in mind for his next project. We are in the design phase now. I'll keep you posted! This bigger barn will be our 4th timber frame project on the Duker Estate and we appreciate his repeat business.

Vermont Timber Works as a rule usually works with natural timber...BUT sometimes a glulam is needed. For example on our Lake Taghkanic Project. The majority of the design is in natural Douglas Fir Timbers, planed and chamfered with clear poly. The arches are glulams and will coordinate very nicely.
Take a close look, you can see the lamination lines. Traditional joinery can be used on glulams, mortise and tenon with hardwood pegs.

A Beautiful Timber Frame House Addition by VTW.

Located in Darien, CT and looking to add on to their 1790's renovated tavern home. A timber frame addition from Vermont Timber Works made perfect sense.

This timber frame addition features hand hewn native white pine timbers and traditional mortise and tenon joinery. Here is another view of the raising, great job guys!

We assemble the timber frame bents on the ground and crane them into place. Bracing and placing connectors, girts & joists as needed.

Looking down from the balcony and up from the timber frame living room, the warmth of the hand hewn timbers is apparent.
Even the kitchen is breathtaking. Each timber hand crafted and hand hewn for an authentic look. This timber frame house addition looks like it's been there all along. Just want the clients were hoping for.

At Vermont Timber Works, we get a lot of calls from prospective buyers, who have no idea what the process entails.

Let me help enlighten those of you who are thinking about a Timber Framed Home, or even a Post and Beam Barn. These tips will be helpful to those of you who might even be consdering adding decorative trusses to your Great Room or dressing things up with some timber beams for the kitchen.

At Vermont Timber Works, the estimating process is complimentary, but is made a lot more efficient if the buyer has an idea of what they are looking for. There are a lot of things to be considered when deciding what type of project will suit you best.
First of all, are you going to Timber Frame the entire home? Are you going to build a hybrid version, and add timber beams to a conventionally framed building?

What type of wood species are you more drawn to? If you don't know the difference, you can spend some time browsing our website for helpful information.

Are you looking for traditional style mortise and tenon joinery, or do you prefer the look of steel connectors and bolts in your frame?

What is your building schedule? Are you planning to build in the next few months, or do you need the timbers right now? Normally, it takes Vermont Timber Works anywhere from 12-14 weeks to deliver a project.

Post and Beam Churches with Heavy Timber Trusses

This custom hand crafted timber frame features our hand hewn option. Rough sawn hemlock, hand hewn with an adze or chisel for a very traditional look. (Great job Todd) Mortise and tenon joinery with the hard wood pegs extended and that arch. Look at that arched beam!
